Letters have a name and a sound
Each letter has a NAME and a SOUND. The letter ‘s’ is named ‘ess’ but says ‘sss’!

A letter’s name is what we call it (the letter M is named ‘em’). A letter’s sound is what it says in a word (M says ‘mmm’). For reading, the sound is the most important — that’s phonics!
