Take Away to 10 First
A clever subtracting trick
Just like adding, we can use 10 to help! Take away to 10 first, then the rest.
14 − 6
Take 4 to reach 10, then 2 more:
14 − 4 = 10, then 10 − 2 = 8
To do 14 − 6: first take away 4 to land on 10, then take the other 2 away → 8. Breaking the number up and using 10 makes big take-aways much easier!
