Fill a ten, then count on
To make a teen number, fill one ten-frame full, then start a second one!
14 = ten and 4
+
10 + 4 = 14
17 = ten and 7
+
10 + 7 = 17
One full ten-frame is 10. The dots in the second frame are the extra ones. 10 and 4 more makes 14. Teen numbers always start with a full ten!
